AUMA actuator initiative at IFAT

Press information, issued: 30.07.10

AUMA actuator initiative at IFAT

AUMA, the established actuator manufacturer which provides modular solutions for valve control, will present its new Generation .2 range of actuators and controls at IFAT 2010.

Offering benefits across potable water and water treatment works, the new Generation .2 multi-turn actuator range SA 07.2 – 16.2 and new actuator controls AC 01.2 are designed to cater for existing market needs and next generation requirements.

Enhanced features and functionality have been introduced by AUMA while retaining proven design principles. Compatibility with AUMA’s previous products ensures ease of upgrade, low-risk investment and that the company will remain at the forefront of technological development.

Capabilities of the new actuators include the integration of field devices into Asset Management Systems. Additional mechanical enhancements improve positioning accuracy, the output speed range of modulating actuators and the extension of the expected actuator lifetime. These advancements are backed by improved corrosion protection.

In line with AUMA’s previous products, the new actuators are available with different fieldbus interfaces, including the Profibus DP interface with V2 services.

Over 45 years ago, AUMA’s first order was for an installation at a WTW. Since that date, the company has extended its support for water industry actuation solutions around the globe.

Asset management with AUMA

Press information, issued: 07.07.10

AUMA addresses next generation requirements with new actuator range.

Asset management functionality has been addressed by AUMA with specific functions provided for the new range of Generation .2 actuators and controls.

With the new Generation .2 multi-turn actuator range SA 07.2 – 16.2, the company has provided a solution that can monitor actuator-specific service conditions and limits. Additionally, the indication of events according to NAMUR recommendation NE 107 categories is provided to help prevent actuator failures and downtime.

AUMA has recognised that plants consist of numerous components supplied by different manufacturers: device feedback must therefore satisfy defined schemes. The approach taken by AUMA has been classification of status signals into four NE 107 classifications, namely ‘out of specification’, ‘maintenance required’, ‘function check’ and ‘failure’.

Future product developments for the Generation .2 range will include a maintenance key for continuous supply of information on actuator status: the data obtained from lifetime tests will be fed into formulae stored within the actuator firmware.

In line with AUMA’s previous products, the new controls are available with different fieldbus interfaces, including the Profibus DP interface with V2 services.

Oil Industry growth for AUMA India

AUMA actuator and master station as adopted by the Indian Oil Corporation
AUMA actuator and master station as adopted by the Indian Oil Corporation

The Indian arm of the AUMA actuator group reports growth of the company’s modular actuation solutions in the oil sector.  The latest contract for AUMA’s valve control technology has been placed by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited for a Naphtha Cracker and Polymer complex.

The Naphtha Cracker project is reported as the cornerstone for Indian Oil's entry into petrochemicals and represents a new market for business growth for the corporation.

Located in the Northern Indian state of Haryana, the installation is an excellent illustration of AUMA working in partnership with the customer to supply a comprehensive solution incorporating hard wiring and bus technology backed by master station support.

The installation, which confirms the company’s expertise in supplying the petrochemical industry, required 75 actuators at the Cracker complex - which has a capacity of 800,000 MT/year of ethylene production.

All actuators have been supplied with control modules suitable for MODBUS RTU protocol.  Additionally, SIMA master stations and hot standby master station with loop technology have been provided.  ESD functionality, achieved through hardwired operation, is provided, tailored to meet the customer’s requirements.

The master stations in redundant configuration communicate through MODBUS RTU protocol with Yokogawa DCS CS 3000. Additional features provided are PCs to monitor the actuators’ functions via the SIMA master stations.

AUMA actuators support asset management at steam power scheme

Press information, issued: 04.06.10

The new block 8 of the RDK power plant where AUMA actuators will support asset management

AUMA actuators will support an asset management system at the Rhine port steam power plant (RDK) in Karlsruhe, Germany. The modular actuation technology will be installed in RDK 8, a new block currently under construction at the 912MW plant. Features of the AUMA product supplied include integral controls and Profibus DP-V2 interfaces: benefits include support of asset management processes.

Addressing a requirement for non intrusive functionality, the actuators will enable the plant to set all operation parameters via local controls without using tools or opening the housing. The RDK 8 scheme also confirms AUMA’s capability supporting difficult access locations - local operation centres are assisted by an actuation solution with integral controls mounted in easy access locations.

Central time-stamped reports provided by AUMA actuators will capture events including switching/setting procedures or failures. When alerted, the DCS will store locally time stamped events to provide detailed analysis of any failures. Device parameter settings will, therefore, be optimised during both the commissioning phase and during operation.

AUMA has a forty year track record supplying the power industry and the Rhine port application is the latest in a serious of prestigious power plant applications. AUMA recently supplied over 2,000 actuators to a National Thermal Power Corporation plant in Sipat, India: supporting the major scale scheme, products supplied include AUMA’s substantial SA 48.1 actuator with 32,000 Nm output torque.

AUMA supports challenging locations such as RDK 8 with separate control mountings

AUMA actuators support shipping sector

AUMA actuators support shipping sector
AUMA bronze housing actuators for valve mounting on military vessels

AUMA reports a significant market for its actuators in the shipping sector. The manufacturer of modular electric actuation solutions advises that its products are essential in ensuring reliability of automated processes for nautical applications.

Credentials for AUMA in the shipping sector include projects ranging from the U 212 A submarines to ambitious civil vessel installations such as valve automation on ‘mega yachts’.

For reasons of safety and financial consideration, high reliability is demanded in the shipping sector and space constraints / severe service conditions restrict maintenance facilities. An important advantage of electric actuators advised by AUMA is their simple and maintenance-free power supply.

Benefits of AUMA actuators for nautical installations include a compact design with coaxial layout of electric motor and gearing directly mounted above the valve flange. With an optimum centre of gravity of the valve / actuator combination, dynamic loads caused by vibration have minimal effect on the valve flange. Additionally, the mounting position can be selected as required resulting in a solution that makes best use of available space in confined locations.

The suitability of AUMA electric actuators for use on vessels is acknowledged in various certification processes including the Germanischer Lloyd Certification GmbH (GLC).

New plug cover reinforces AUMA´s adaptable design

Press information, issued: 08.02.10

AUMA has developed a new cover for plug and socket connections for electric actuators and controls. The S-105 cover provides more space for cable gland/conduit assembly. Increased interior capacity makes cable connection easier and accommodates thicker cabling.

Based on AUMA’s modular actuator design philosophy, the cover - which is 15 mm higher than the company’s previous model - is fully compatible with its predecessor version, ensuring that early generation products can be incorporated.

As standard, AUMA actuators are equipped with a plug/socket connector for motor and control cables. AUMA reports that the significant advantage of this type of connection is that, once connected, wiring remains undisturbed, even if the actuator has to be removed from the valve, e.g. for maintenance purposes.

The new plug cover is designed for all AUMA weather-proof and explosion-proof actuators with or without controls.

AUMA’s earlier model plug cover will continue to be supplied for a defined period.
